I have owned many performance cars in my lifetime ranging from NSXs, Porsches, a Lotus Elise, MR-2s, Corvettes, and BMWs, so when I say the GTI is one of the best cars I have ever owned, I'm talking from experience. I love the way the car tracks and corners at high speeds. Sometimes when I think I'm going too fast around a turn, the GTI proves me wrong again and again. I've never been a fan of the GTI's hatchback look, but its grown on me because of the car's impressive driving prowess. I love the view over the dash onto the sloping hood to the road ahead. Only my NSXs, Lotus, and MR-2s offered that view. The GTI is also faster than I expected with its low RPM turbo rush. The car is more spacious and comfortable as well. It's near-Audi-like (because it is) in design and quality. I love the classic GTI cloth seats. I recently test drove a Golf "R" before buying the GTI and except for a bit better acceleration (yes, only a bit) and a more raspy exhaust note, the GTI felt as good as the "R" for about $10K less. As someone else noted, a larger fuel tank would help, and a power sunroof with cloth seats would be a nice option-combo. For me, the GTI is a "wolf in sheep's clothing" with its understated, utilitarian appearance, sophisticated interior and seat of the pants sports car performance and feel. Unlike the majority of GTI's competitors who only offer manual transmissions, the VW DSG transmission extends the VW GTI market to those of us who prefer paddle shifting to the alternative. I look forward to the next excuse to drive my GTI.Read more reviews at Cars.com
